Eric became a Certified Appellate Law Specialist and is currently the owner of Schiffer, APC, a full-service boutique litigation and appellate law firm.

Wolfgang Beumer, ‘03

Wolfgang joined the Air Force, got married, and welcomed 2 kids. After completing residency in Otolaryngology at Duke University in 2012, Wolfgang spent the next 8 years as a USAF staff surgeon at Langley AFB and Nellis AFB. He served on 2 deployments to Afghanistan. Recently, Wolfgang came back to UCI Med Center from 2020-2022 for a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship with Dr. Brian Wong. Now Wolfgang is at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX serving as the Chair for the Department of Surgery.

Jiana Machhor, ‘20

Jiana is in her last year of medical school at Saint Louis University School of Medicine! She is going to apply to the triple board (pediatrics/psychiatry/child & adolescent psychiatry) residency and the pediatrics residency in September 2024 for (hopeful!) match into residency in March 2025.

Kaitlyn Danlinhton, ‘20

Kaitlyn is currently a law student at George Washington University and interning at the California Department of Justice at the Los Angeles office.

Julia Peng, ‘18

Julia recently pivoted to a new role where, in addition to continuing to work in corporate finance, she will be reporting on sustainability matters in accordance to the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) under EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Sona Mkrtichyan, ‘22

Since graduating from CHC, Sona started attending USC Gould School of Law and is on track to becoming a successful patent attorney in the field of biotechnology. After completing her first year of law school with all honors grades, Sona secured a patent law internship with Georgiamune Inc., a biotechnology company focused on immunotherapeutic drug development, for this summer. She also earned a Summer Associate position at Goodwin Procter LLP, a prestigious Big Law firm with an acclaimed Life Sciences Practice Group, for the summer of 2025. Sona is currently preparing for the USPTO Patent Bar examination and will soon be beginning an online program through the University of Maryland to obtain her Master of Science degree in Biotechnology that she will complete concurrently with law school in 2026. Her activities after graduating from the CHC have been geared towards developing both her legal and scientific skills, and she is so excited to see what further goals the future will hold.

Alex Block, ‘15

Alex finished his Ph.D. in Computer Science in August 2022. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Georgetown University until October 2024 (started September 2022). Alex will begin a position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago in October 2024.

Jason Kranz, ‘97

Jason served as an officer in the U.S. Navy since 1997. As part of the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps and the world-famous Seabees, he served all over the US and around the world providing public works, construction, and contracting support to the Navy and Marine Corps team. Right now, Jason is the Chief Staff Officer at Naval Base Ventura County, leading 900 Sailors and civilians who manage Port Hueneme, Point Mugu, and San Nicolas Island. NBVC supports 24,000 service members, dependents, and employees, making it the largest employer in Ventura County.

Jose Vasquez, ‘21

In 2019, Jose embarked on his academic journey at UC Irvine as a transfer student in the Campuswide Honors Collegium (CHC). His commitment to excellence culminated in a Magna Cum Laude graduation in 2021, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Neurobiology, a minor in psychological sciences, and a commendation for Excellence in Research.

Since then, Jose has been an integral part of the UCI School of Medicine’s Department of Physiology and Biophysics, where he has served as a dedicated research technician in the Beier Lab for the last 3 years. Their work revolves around unraveling the intricate neural circuits underlying addiction, neurodegenerative disorders, and psychiatric illnesses. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Jose was honored with a NIDA diversity supplement to fund his research during his post-baccalaureate studies. Notably, his contributions have been instrumental in several groundbreaking projects, some of which are currently awaiting publication. As a co-author on multiple research papers, Jose continues to shape the scientific landscape.

Now, with immense pride and determination, he embarks on the next phase of his academic journey—an MD/PhD program at UC San Diego! 🌟🎓🚀

Nik Udompanyanan, ‘99

“Wow, it’s been a long time.” After graduation, Nik went directly to Harvard Medical School and finished in 2005 after doing an extra year of lab and clinical research and spending a bit of time traveling. He went on to do an emergency medicine residency at UCLA until 2009 and started working at Kaiser in San Jose. Nik moved up here because his wife is from the area and they got married soon after. They now have three young kids and are just trying to survive the rigors of parenthood (harder than college or med school!)

Lenore & Ezekiel Sanborn de Asis, ‘96

Their two eldest sons both graduated from UCs in 2024. Peter (born in 2000) graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a BS in Psychology and Thomas (born in 2001) from UC San Diego with a BS in Cognitive Science and BA in Japanese. Thomas will be working for the Japan Exchange in Teaching (JET) Program in Northern Japan as Lenore & Ezekiel had in 1996-1999. They couldn’t get a photo all together since the graduations were at the exact same time on opposite ends of the state. Their youngest daughter is still in college and they live in Santa Clara, CA. Ezekiel has been working at Amazon as a software engineering manager for 14 years and Lenore manages their short-term rental in Mt. Shasta, CA (http://www.4elementshouse.com).

Haleigh Sherman, ‘21

Haleigh is currently attending Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine to achieve their dream of becoming a physician. Haleigh is part of the M.D. class of 2027 and is looking forward to starting the second year of medical school in a few months!

Alana Tova, ‘19

In March, Alana matched at Tufts University for Family Medicine Residency, and is now a month into their first year & seeing their own primary care patients! In addition to the broad-spectrum joys of family medicine, Alana’s clinical interests include gender-affirming care for all ages, addiction care, outpatient pediatrics, and reproductive and sexual healthcare, including abortion. She is happy to be a resource to anyone applying into medical school or residency with any of these interests.

Joseph Nunez, ‘92

Joseph has a few exciting updates. His son, Luke Nunez, will be a new Anteater. He will be attending UCI in the Fall 2024 as a student in the History program. As for Joseph, he will be moving back to California. Joseph accepted a faculty position in Biology at MiraCosta College down in Oceanside. He’s happy to be moving back to California after 31 years away!
